by: Dan - - Comments (0)
Vizio announced yesterday that they have introduced two Surround Bar audio systems and a $200 Blu-ray player. The surround bars Vizio announced include the VSB210WS (includes a 2.4 GHz wireless sub) for $349 and the VSB210 without the sub for $199. Both are slated for an April 2009 release. The Blu-ray (Model VBR210) will have a MSRP of $199 and will also hit retail in April 2009. In addition, the accessories announced include wall mounts, HDMI and Fiber Optic cables as well as a surge protector. Sean and I will be stopping in to see these Vizio products along with the new TVs that were also announced yesterday.

CES 2009: Day One on the floor

by: Dan - - Comments (0)
The GamingNexus crew has a full schedule today, as Sean, John and I have no less than 18 different appointments/events scheduled. Some of the companies we will be meeting with today include Capcom, Sony Online Entertainment, THX, Mitsubishi Projectors, ezGear, Viewsonic, Vizio and Tritton Tech. Keep an eye out for updates on these and more.

We will also be wrapping up the day with a visit to the annual Showstoppers event (similar to Digital Experience) and then try our luck at the SOE Annual Poker Tournament, where we will also expected to get some hands on with Free Realms.  I imagine we may have more fun here in Vegas than Chuck, who is hanging out at his own convention back in Sandusky, OH.

CES 2009: Samsung Press Event

by: Dan - - Comments (0)
Unlike last year when Chuck and I were shut out 15 people from the door, Sean and I made it into the Samsung press event (despite a huge line) and were in row seven for the event. At the presser, Samsung introduced a bevy of new products today, highlighted by their LED televisions that display some incredible black levels, are thin as can be and are simply gorgeous. I snapped the pictures (after the jump) zoomed in from about 50 feet away, yet you can see how impressive they looked. We will get a much closer look at these during our booth tour on Saturday.

Another product announcement that caught our gaming eye was the Samsung 2233RZ 22” 3D PC monitor. It is compatible with Nvidia’s new GeForce 3D Vision graphics card and should hit retail outlets in April 2009 with an MSRP of $399.

Some other items of note included Samsung shifting to a one style fits all strategy with the menus of their products. So their cameras, TVs, MP3 players and so on will all have the same menu system, similar to how Sony PS3, PSP and XBR series TVs share a menu.

CES 2009: Sharp Press Event

by: Dan - - Comments (0)
Sharp hosted their annual CES press event today and introduced a ton of new products, innovations and initiatives. From our standpoint, the most important announcement was that of the latest gaming LCD Television. The LC-32E67U is the new gaming model (following last years GP3). This unit will include the Sharp Vyper Drive technology, four HDMI inputs with 24p input capability, full 1080p and two Component inputs. The LC-32E67U should be available in February with and MSRP of $899.99.

Sharp also introduced two new sound bar products with the HT-SB300 and HT-SB200. The models both have adjustable bass, treble and sup output. We should have a much better impression of the new 32E67U and other products when we hit the Sharp booth during our media tour on Saturday.

Windows 7 beta due out Friday, promises to not suck

by: Chuck - - Comments (0)
I missed this last night but one of the things that Microsot announced last night at their CES keynote was that the Windows 7 beta will be available Friday for everyone to download and try out.  The OS features a host of UI and stability improvements over Vista and should be a much more pleasant experience than Vista was.

It's worth noting that this is a beta and that it's probably going to have more than it's share of "quirks".  However I do know a few non-Microsoft people who have been running the previous build of Windows 7 (the PDC build) without any major problems.  I've got a spare box lying around the house that I'll probably upgrade to the new OS to see if it lives up to it's promises.  Check back next week for some impressions.

CES 2009: Digital Experience Impressions

by: John - - Comments (0)
It's CES 2009 and as with every CES I've been to the first day saw the GN group at Digital Experience. For those that don't know, it's really a gathering of vendors in a large ballroom and you can quickly hit them in a small environment compared to CES. I had a plan of stopping by three booths from the list as there weren't as many game specific ones at the event.

I'll let Dan and Sean talk about Nyko but they had on hand Wii accessories. Dan and Sean have an appointment with them later on in the week so they will have a greater detailed account of their products. I did hold the new wireless Kama design in my hand and even with my small hands I found it to be a little smaller than I liked. The lower front button had a plastic lip to rest your finger on but I found it to be a little in the way. In all honesty it was a quick look so maybe Dan and Sean will have a better feel of it when they look at the product more closely later on in the week.

There were two products at Logitech's setup I really wanted to get my hands on. First up was the Harmony 1100 remote control. The successor to the Harmony 1000, the Harmony 1100 has some nice improvements. For starters the Logitech rep was really touting the customizability of the screen. Setup the buttons to your liking and make the remote display what you want and when. I was rather impressed with the responsiveness of the capacitive touch screen and the picture was nice and bright. On each side of the screen are some small plastic ridges that correspond with a sidebar button on the screen. They aren't real buttons but they are very helpful in giving a tactile feel of where the LCD button was just by sliding your finger over from the ridge to the screen. The Harmony 1100 felt great in the hand and I think I might have my replacement for my Harmony One.

The other big product was the G19 keyboard. The new gaming keyboard from Logitech has 12 programmable keys and lets you record macros on the fly. Like the G13, you can alter the color of the backlit keys as the product features the same multi-color LED as the G13. In fact you can combine this with the G13 and the new G9x mouse and have an entire setup with matching colors that are to your specification. The major feature though is the 320x240 color LCD display on the top. It's a vivid LCD panel that was displaying a YouTube video when I was looking at it. The video looked mostly smooth but I can't tell if it's because of the video or the panel that didn't make it completely smooth. I'll be able to run some tests once we get it in though to see how well it really performs. I have to say the LCD is quite impressive up close and it will be an open source API to develop plug-ins for it. Due out in March, the G19 looks like it has the chops to become THE gaming keyboard to pick up.

NVIDIA was a quick stop for me as I will be meeting them Saturday but they were on hand to show off their 3D glasses technology. Now the system is like those 3D movies you view in the theater with powered polarized glasses and they were running it off the up and coming Samsung 22" LCD monitor that had a 120Hz refresh rate. Dan can offer up more details on the monitor but the powered NVIDIA glasses would produce an impressive 3D effect on videos and games. They had my current favorite, Left 4 Dead as the demo. I'll have more details on it after Saturday but this might be a good seller for those wanting a new experience in gaming. It does need specialized hardware in the form of the monitor to work though and I heard the way they are going to sell it was in a bundle. Look for more after Saturday.

On an unrelated gaming note, I did stop by the HTC booth which makes my Touch Pro phone. Scanning the table, I told one of the reps it's too bad he didn't have the Touch HD out to look at. With that said, he pulled one out of his pocket saying that they did for those that asked for it. The phone felt really nice in my hand and it's certainly an appeal for those who want an iPhone physical format but want the flexibility of Windows Mobile. I don't know if I could do without a hard keyboard though but the Touch HD had me drooling.

Halo Wars demo coming Feb 5, game to be released Feb 28

by: Chuck - - Comments (0)
Microsoft announced today in their CES keynote speach that they will be releasing a demo of Halo Wars on February 5th.  Glad to know that people will get to try before they buy the game as people will get a chance to see if they like the RTS controls of the game that Ensemble has worked so hard on.  This will give you a good head start as MS has said the game will be released on Feb 28.

Fiddy's cover system shown off in new screenshots

by: Chuck - - Comments (0)
Here are a few screenshots from 50 Cent:Blood in the Sand which show off the new cover system in the game.  Here's a hint, it's a lot like the one in Gears of War 2 as the game uses the same engine.  I know a lot of people are dismissing this game but from what I've seen I think the game has a ton of potential.

Robinson's Requiem and Deus adventure onto GOG.com

by: Randy - - Comments (0)
Defunct French developer, Silmarils, is seeing two of their creations rise again on GOG.com.  The Robinson's Requiem Collection contains both the original Robinson's Requiem plus its "informal sequel" Deus
"Both games places the player in the boots of explorers who find themselves stranded on mysterious alien planets with a mission to survive. The notoriously difficult games put players' survival skills to the test as they need to manage every aspect of their character's body in an attempt to survive the hostile world."
Apparently, your character is able to contract scads of diseases and ailments.  Take that, malaria-only Far Cry 2.

Harmony 1100 looks to be the remote to have

by: John - - Comments (0)
I can't say how much I dig the Harmony line of remotes from Logitech. Well, they have announced an update to one of their best ones as the Harmony 1100 is looking to be released in the near future. It's a universal remote with a large color touch screen and I'm assuming it's a capacitive touch screen to boot and you can customize the icons to suite your needs. It does cost a whopping $500 though but man, just look at it. Let's hope I get to try one of these bad boys out when it's released.

Logitech announces more G products

by: John - - Comments (0)
Right now I'm toiling around with the G13 Advanced Gameboard but at CES there are going to be a few more new items to the G lineup. First up is surround sound headset that also includes a mic for voice communication. The big thing though is a brand new keyboard dubbed the G19 offering a color LCD. I'm a big fan of their original LCD keyboard so I'm anxious to see how the new one holds up. Finally, a G9x Laser Mouse will offer higher DPI for your gaming pleasure. Look for some information on the products during CES this week when I get up close and personal with them

Epic bringing Gears of War 2 update

by: John - - Comments (0)
I've been playing a ton of Horde mode lately in Gears of War 2 so I'm happy to see that Epic is fixing a few things regarding multiplayer mode. I'm also happy to see that the shotgun's getting some fixes as I use that a ton in the game. Now if it wouldn't take so long to get into a multiplayer game sometimes when searching for other players by yourself, I'd be a happy camper.

Thanks Kotaku.

Killzone 2 demo only available for pre-orders until game launches

by: Chuck - - Comments (0)
I'm not sure why Sony is limiting access to the Killzone 2 demo to those who pre-order the game from Gamestop but I hope they got a ton of money for it as it seems like they are shooting themselves in the foot.  Why would you limit access to one of your biggest games in years just to get people to pre-order the game from a second tier retailer?  Sure they get the demo after the game launches but why not release the demo for everyone (like you are in Europe) so people can see how awesome the game is (trust me, we're talking game of the year candidate right now).  The decision just baffles me as I would think they would want everyone to see the game to get them to pre-order it and not the other way around.

Logitech feeling the economic downturn, cutting 15% of their workforce

by: Chuck - - Comments (0)
It looks like Logitech is feeling the economic turbulence as much as everyone else as they announced today that they are laying off 15% of their workforce and eliminating financial targets (which is a fancy way of saying they are not going to forecast demand/sales of their products for the immediate future).  John and I are big fans of their hardware (I haven't used a non-Logitech mouse in over six years) and hopefully they can pull it out.  John is going to be meeting with them at CES later this week so be sure to check back later this week for his impressions of their new hardware.
