CES 2009: Day One on the floor

by: Dan - - Comments (0)
The GamingNexus crew has a full schedule today, as Sean, John and I have no less than 18 different appointments/events scheduled. Some of the companies we will be meeting with today include Capcom, Sony Online Entertainment, THX, Mitsubishi Projectors, ezGear, Viewsonic, Vizio and Tritton Tech. Keep an eye out for updates on these and more.

We will also be wrapping up the day with a visit to the annual Showstoppers event (similar to Digital Experience) and then try our luck at the SOE Annual Poker Tournament, where we will also expected to get some hands on with Free Realms.  I imagine we may have more fun here in Vegas than Chuck, who is hanging out at his own convention back in Sandusky, OH.

CES 2009: Sharp Press Event

by: Dan - - Comments (0)
Sharp hosted their annual CES press event today and introduced a ton of new products, innovations and initiatives. From our standpoint, the most important announcement was that of the latest gaming LCD Television. The LC-32E67U is the new gaming model (following last years GP3). This unit will include the Sharp Vyper Drive technology, four HDMI inputs with 24p input capability, full 1080p and two Component inputs. The LC-32E67U should be available in February with and MSRP of $899.99.

Sharp also introduced two new sound bar products with the HT-SB300 and HT-SB200. The models both have adjustable bass, treble and sup output. We should have a much better impression of the new 32E67U and other products when we hit the Sharp booth during our media tour on Saturday.

Windows 7 beta due out Friday, promises to not suck

by: Chuck - - Comments (0)
I missed this last night but one of the things that Microsot announced last night at their CES keynote was that the Windows 7 beta will be available Friday for everyone to download and try out.  The OS features a host of UI and stability improvements over Vista and should be a much more pleasant experience than Vista was.

It's worth noting that this is a beta and that it's probably going to have more than it's share of "quirks".  However I do know a few non-Microsoft people who have been running the previous build of Windows 7 (the PDC build) without any major problems.  I've got a spare box lying around the house that I'll probably upgrade to the new OS to see if it lives up to it's promises.  Check back next week for some impressions.

CES 2009: Digital Experience Impressions

by: John - - Comments (0)
It's CES 2009 and as with every CES I've been to the first day saw the GN group at Digital Experience. For those that don't know, it's really a gathering of vendors in a large ballroom and you can quickly hit them in a small environment compared to CES. I had a plan of stopping by three booths from the list as there weren't as many game specific ones at the event.

I'll let Dan and Sean talk about Nyko but they had on hand Wii accessories. Dan and Sean have an appointment with them later on in the week so they will have a greater detailed account of their products. I did hold the new wireless Kama design in my hand and even with my small hands I found it to be a little smaller than I liked. The lower front button had a plastic lip to rest your finger on but I found it to be a little in the way. In all honesty it was a quick look so maybe Dan and Sean will have a better feel of it when they look at the product more closely later on in the week.

There were two products at Logitech's setup I really wanted to get my hands on. First up was the Harmony 1100 remote control. The successor to the Harmony 1000, the Harmony 1100 has some nice improvements. For starters the Logitech rep was really touting the customizability of the screen. Setup the buttons to your liking and make the remote display what you want and when. I was rather impressed with the responsiveness of the capacitive touch screen and the picture was nice and bright. On each side of the screen are some small plastic ridges that correspond with a sidebar button on the screen. They aren't real buttons but they are very helpful in giving a tactile feel of where the LCD button was just by sliding your finger over from the ridge to the screen. The Harmony 1100 felt great in the hand and I think I might have my replacement for my Harmony One.

The other big product was the G19 keyboard. The new gaming keyboard from Logitech has 12 programmable keys and lets you record macros on the fly. Like the G13, you can alter the color of the backlit keys as the product features the same multi-color LED as the G13. In fact you can combine this with the G13 and the new G9x mouse and have an entire setup with matching colors that are to your specification. The major feature though is the 320x240 color LCD display on the top. It's a vivid LCD panel that was displaying a YouTube video when I was looking at it. The video looked mostly smooth but I can't tell if it's because of the video or the panel that didn't make it completely smooth. I'll be able to run some tests once we get it in though to see how well it really performs. I have to say the LCD is quite impressive up close and it will be an open source API to develop plug-ins for it. Due out in March, the G19 looks like it has the chops to become THE gaming keyboard to pick up.

NVIDIA was a quick stop for me as I will be meeting them Saturday but they were on hand to show off their 3D glasses technology. Now the system is like those 3D movies you view in the theater with powered polarized glasses and they were running it off the up and coming Samsung 22" LCD monitor that had a 120Hz refresh rate. Dan can offer up more details on the monitor but the powered NVIDIA glasses would produce an impressive 3D effect on videos and games. They had my current favorite, Left 4 Dead as the demo. I'll have more details on it after Saturday but this might be a good seller for those wanting a new experience in gaming. It does need specialized hardware in the form of the monitor to work though and I heard the way they are going to sell it was in a bundle. Look for more after Saturday.

On an unrelated gaming note, I did stop by the HTC booth which makes my Touch Pro phone. Scanning the table, I told one of the reps it's too bad he didn't have the Touch HD out to look at. With that said, he pulled one out of his pocket saying that they did for those that asked for it. The phone felt really nice in my hand and it's certainly an appeal for those who want an iPhone physical format but want the flexibility of Windows Mobile. I don't know if I could do without a hard keyboard though but the Touch HD had me drooling.

Harmony 1100 looks to be the remote to have

by: John - - Comments (0)
I can't say how much I dig the Harmony line of remotes from Logitech. Well, they have announced an update to one of their best ones as the Harmony 1100 is looking to be released in the near future. It's a universal remote with a large color touch screen and I'm assuming it's a capacitive touch screen to boot and you can customize the icons to suite your needs. It does cost a whopping $500 though but man, just look at it. Let's hope I get to try one of these bad boys out when it's released.

Logitech announces more G products

by: John - - Comments (0)
Right now I'm toiling around with the G13 Advanced Gameboard but at CES there are going to be a few more new items to the G lineup. First up is surround sound headset that also includes a mic for voice communication. The big thing though is a brand new keyboard dubbed the G19 offering a color LCD. I'm a big fan of their original LCD keyboard so I'm anxious to see how the new one holds up. Finally, a G9x Laser Mouse will offer higher DPI for your gaming pleasure. Look for some information on the products during CES this week when I get up close and personal with them

by: John - - Comments (0)
BFG Technologies is leaping into the full system arena with their announcement of the Phobos line of computers. If you're a gamer who wants a high end machine but doesn't want to spend the time to build one, this one might be up your alley. The Phobos will be using all the latest technologies such as then Intel i7 965 Extreme Edition 3.2GHz Processor, 2 (yes TWO) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295 cards, and a CoolIt liquid cooling solution. For media, they are including a TV tuner and a slot loading Blu-ray drive as well as an integrated iPod/iPhone dock. The systems will range from $3,000 all the way up to $8,000 for the best of the best. You'll get to know what options are available after January 8th and I'm sure I'll see them in action when I visit with BFG at CES in a few days. Expect some pics and hands on impressions then. Adventures in Braid and the overwrought metaphor

by: Randy - - Comments (0)
New Year's Eve 2008.  My wife Grace and I paid fellow GamingNexus writer Sean Nack and his wife Stephanie an overnight visit.  We brought over Monopoly, but we weren't feeling very cutthroat.  We brought over Balderdash, but weren't feeling definitive.  Nothing at the theater piqued our attention.  And so my mind wandered back over the year, as minds are wont to do when another 365 days have come and gone.  And I'd resolved to pay more attention to indie developers for the upcoming year, 2009--but it didn't feel like it was too early to start.

Jonathan Blow's Braid was a game that I'd continually skipped past.  My Xbox 360 red ringed a week before it hit XBLA.  By the time my 360 came back, Spore hit.  Then Warhammer Online hit.  Then Civilization IV: Colonization hit.  Then Fracture (wince).  Then Dead SpaceFable II, Far Cry 2, Fallout 3, Need For Speed Undercover (wince again), Prince of Persia...then a revisit to Pirates of the Burning Sea and the new-to-me Europa Universalis III.

And through it all Braid has been taunting me, calling me a spineless, lilly-livered coward for (predominantly) sticking with this holiday season's no-brainers.  Jonathan Blow is a man that, as far as I can tell from photographs and videos, has never smiled in his life; and he wasn't smiling at me now either. So it was time to take my cowardice and crutch myself on Sean Nack and his wife.  One hour before an incredibly slow-moving ball was to drop in Times Square, I convinced everyone to participate in what's been heralded in certain circles as the Most Pretentious Moment in Gaming for 2008:  Braid.  Plus it's been showing up--rather conspicuously--as the media darling on more than one Top 10 of 2008 list.

All four of us took up strategic positions on the couch, and it took all four of our minds put together to make it through the infernally-puzzling Braid.  We played, we laughed, we scoffed, we scolded, we shook our heads in defeat, we threw our heads back in victory, we pumped our fists with elation then alternately wished we could punch Jonathan Blow in the face.  It'd been several years since I'd been on a roller coaster ride, but traversing Braid certainly counted.  And just because we made it through doesn't mean the entire journey made complete sense.

Here's what Braid's aftertaste was like to Sean and I--the following is copied and pasted from a back-and-forth email between the two of us--plus Sean divulges his sentiments on the endings of Far Cry 2 and Fallout 3 as well.  We figured it was high time the discussion of Braid be taken beyond the "It's the greatest ending ever!" platitudes.

* * * * * SPOILER ALERT * * * * *

...And if you haven't played Braid, then none of this will make sense out of context anyway.  [Continue reading "Adventures in Braid and the overwrought metaphor."]

TechCrunch shows us what Ballmer's saying at the CES keynote

by: John - - Comments (1)
A few of us here at Gaming Nexus will be at CES in a week and Dan's been saying we have to go to the Microsoft keynote. Well if what TechCrunch says is true, I'm going to skip it. The "highlights" of the keynote will be that Windows 7 will be an open beta, two already announced Halo games coming to the 360, easier networking, and Windows Mobile gets Flash in the first quarter of this year. If again this is true, then yeah it's going to be pretty boring. I mean we already have Flash on Windows Mobile via Opera on some of the latest WinMo phones and the two Halo games are pretty much well known in the gaming community. If you really want to you can find a leaked copy of the Windows 7 beta so the only thing we don't have any knowledge on is the easier networking which isn't that big of a deal in my opinion. Overall, sounds like something we can skip but who knows. Dan, Sean, or I might just stop by and check out the happenings before Digital Experience.

Happy New Years from GamingNexus

Welcome to 2009, hopefully you had a good time last night and are having a nice relaxing day today.  Posting will be very, very light today but we'll be getting back onto our regular schedule tomorrow.  We've got a lot of things planned for 2009 and we hope you'll stick around for them.

Did you do anything game related as part of your New Years Eve celebration?  If so leave a comment and let us know what you did.  Personally I had a small gathering of folks over and we played Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero World Tour most of the night.

Horizons Broadening Project - 2009: Europa Universalis III

by: Randy - - Comments (0)
Over at Gamers With Jobs (an intelligent and articulate group of guys, but thankfully never all-knowing), co-founder Sean "Elysium" Sands is commencing a "Horizons Broadening Project - 2009."  Once a month he'll be going out of his way to play a videogame genre that he wouldn't normally.  Hey, you can't like everything in the first place, so I certainly don't judge.  Sean picked out Birth of America II for his project in January; it's one of those games where "deep" is an obvious understatement when it comes to descriptors for the level of strategy-building involved.  He'll play for a month and then do a write-up. I'm not nearly so committed, but I'll humor the idea for now.

To follow suit with the "deep" strategy genre, one that I've never dipped my toe into (sorry, Sid Meier, your games are so easy they play themselves after a while) I picked up Europa Universalis III - Complete.  The original is about a year old, but the Complete version comes with the In Nomine and Napoleon's Ambition expansion packs. This game is no joke.  Even the tutorials--which are so vague that they have the gall to provide "hints"--assumes I've already had four cups of coffee and roll with an IQ of 120 or greater.

Deep breath, Randy.  You can do this.

I've only had time to dabble for a few moments in the full-length singleplayer campaign, so I hopped around a few times just to get a feel for my options.  The results were less than flattering...

Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine Online goes open beta

by: Randy - - Comments (0)
To kick off its open beta, Aeria Games has released a 40+ screenshot blowout of Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine Online.  (Although there's considerably more variety in the dozen screens they handed out a couple months ago.)  The soon-to-be free-to-play MMO is already up and running in Japan, and has now unlocked its open beta to the public here in the West.  It'll be free to download with zero subscription fees, which means, of course, that you'll be shelling over microtransaction cash for the good stuff.

Classic Gaming Trivia for 12/30/2008

Archon is coming back

by: John - - Comments (2)
The folks at React! Games are going to push out another Archon game, a classic chess action game hybrid that was one of my favorites back when I was young. I'm excited and a little cautious at the same time. React! Games is a new company so there's no track record on how well this game can turn out. The owner does have experience though by helping to develop an Archon clone but I'm still hesitant when it comes to these types of announcements. I hope we see some screenshots and gameplay soon so that I can better judge the game but for now, I'll be cautiously optomistic.

Left 4 Dead twittering

by: John - - Comments (0)
Chuck's a huge Twitter fanatic. I'm not so much but I know a lot of folks do and it seems to be gaining popularity. I might have to add four more folks as it seems the four Survivors of Left 4 Dead are also twittering. Just add louis_l4d, zoey_l4d, bill_l4d and francis_l4d and you'll soon get updates to your Twitter account about their actions as they stroll through the zombie apocalypse. I recommend Cobra Commander as well even though it's not game related.

AMD Phenom II goes on sale

by: John - - Comments (0)
A few days ago I had a conference call with AMD about their new Dragon initiative and how the Phenom II processor is a big part of it. Specs were kept secret but it looks like the secret might be out now because the one of the parts in the Phenom II line is showing up for sale. Computers4Sure is selling the AMD Phenom II X4 940 processor for $304. Specs are a Quad-Core AM2+ socket CPU running at 3GHz built on a 45nm process.L2 cache consists of 4x512KB and then there's 6MB of L3 cache on the CPU.We'll see if this stays up but for now there's one of the new processors for AMD.

Thanks Engadget.
